charcoal

Shiva impaled Andhaka on his trident and lifted him upon it. The sweat that emanated from Shiva gave rise to a girl and a boy of the colour of charcoal, who proceed to consume Andhaka's blood before it falls onto the ground. Shiva names the girl Cārcikā and the boy Maṅgala. He holds Andhaka impaled on his trident for thousands of years, reducing his body to a mere skeletal appearance. Andhaka begged for forgiveness and began praising Shiva, upon which Shiva agreed to release him on the condition that he accept Parvati as his mother. Andhaka does so and also accepts Shiva as his father. He is forgiven and made a Gaṇa chief. Shiva takes him to the Mandara mountain where Parvati also blesses the same boon to him and he later becomes famous by the name of Bhṛṅgi.

Darkness to Light

All the rishis once paid homage to both Shiva and Parvati, but Bhringi would not worship Parvati and dedicated himself solely to Shiva.

To Make him worship Parvati as well, Shiva transformed himself into his androgynous form of Ardhanarishvara, in which state he was combined with his consort Parvati

Bhringi  remained undeterred. Transformed himself in a bee, he bored his way through the male part of androgynous Shiva and continued his worship.

An annoyed Parvati Curses Bhringi to lose all that comes from mother's body (tissues and blood)
(the father is said to be responsible for bones and nerves). So Bhringi is reduced to bones and nerves and cannot even stand.

A compassionate Shiva then gives the now-remorseful rishi a third leg on which to stand. Hence Bhringi is shown as the tripod in Shiva's depictions. Then Parvathi Blesses him to

Chand

According to Shiva Purana

Chandraghanta is the “Shakti” of Lord Shiva in the form of Chandrashekhara.

Each aspect of Shiva is accompanied by Shakti, therefore are Ardhanarishvara.
